I'm very pleased (and flattered) to learn that Saturn Returns has been nominated for the Philip K Dick Award, for "distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the United States." It appears alongside a truly stellar list of names, including Elizabeth Bear, M. John Harrison and Karen Traviss. The result will be announced in March.

This news has prompted a wave of Dick jokes, the likes of which I haven't seen since High School. Bring 'em on! :-)

The judges of the 2007 Philip K. Dick Award and the Philadelphia SF Society are pleased to announce seven nominated works that comprise the final ballot for the award:

GREY by Jon Armstrong (Night Shade Books)
UNDERTOW by Elizabeth Bear (Bantam Spectra)
FROM THE NOTEBOOKS OF DR. BRAIN by Minister Faust (Del Rey)
NOVA SWING by M. John Harrison (Bantam Spectra)
GRADISIL by Adam Roberts (Pyr)
ALLY by Karen Traviss (Eos)
SATURN RETURNS by Sean Williams (Ace Books)

First prize and any special citations will be announced on Friday, March 21, 2008 at Norwescon 31 at the Doubletree Hotel Seattle Airport, SeaTac, Washington.

The Philip K. Dick Award is presented annually with the support of the Philip K. Dick Trust for distinguished science fiction published in paperback original form in the United States. The award is sponsored by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society and the award ceremony is sponsored by the NorthWest Science Fiction Society. Last year’s winner was SPIN CONTROL by Chris Moriarty (Bantam Spectra) with a special citation to CARNIVAL by Elizabeth Bear (Bantam Spectra). The 2007 judges are Steve Miller, Chris Moriarty (chair), Steven Piziks, Randy Schroeder, Ann Tonsor Zeddies.

Congratulations!

Congratulations! I know my opinions on that particular work are not those of the management, but I'm very shallow ;-)

That's a rather special feather in your already well-decorated hat, Sean. Congratulations and good luck!

Woot! Congrats!
9th-Jan-2008 09:45 am (UTC)
Best of luck Sean :-)

I'll give you the huzzah here too! Wonder how erm, large the jokes are going to become :P
10th-Jan-2008 01:13 am (UTC)
Ha!
9th-Jan-2008 01:00 pm (UTC)
Congrats and good luck, Sean! I'm sure you're imagining it already... being up there on the stage in front of everyone, having a big shiny Dick thrust into your eager hands, and taking it with a smile.
10th-Jan-2008 01:14 am (UTC)
Now *that's* what I'm talking about! :-)
10th-Jan-2008 11:44 pm (UTC)
Congrats Sean!
And when you stride proudly up on stage to say your acceptance speech, just dont cock it up...
11th-Jan-2008 07:46 am (UTC)
I'll try not to. I hear at the celebration afterwards everyone has a real ball.
9th-Jan-2008 01:11 pm (UTC)
Congrats! And good luck!

You too! I hope you get it this year.

Are you going to the announcement ceremony?
10th-Jan-2008 01:34 am (UTC)
Hah! I refuse to root for myself. I'm a Yankee.

I won't be there, unfortunately. Do you need an acceptor?
10th-Jan-2008 01:47 am (UTC)
"Root" means something very different here in Australia, so I'm going to refuse that opportunity as well. :-)

I hadn't thought as far ahead as an acceptor. It's unlikely I'll make it, although I'd very much like to be there.
10th-Jan-2008 01:55 am (UTC)
Hee. Yeah, I Know, but I am a slave to my dialect. *g* "Kitchen Roll" sounds dirty to an Ami, but the Brits still say it. ;-)

If you wind up at a loss for somebody to read your acceptance speech, let me know, and I will try to roust out somebody. I know a bunch of Seattle writers.
10th-Jan-2008 02:36 am (UTC)
I represent all Australians (or like to think I do) when I say that we have no idea what a "Kitchen Roll" is, but I reckon it sounds pretty dirty too. :-)

Thanks for the offer of fixing me up with someone in Seattle. I'll be sure to take you up on that if I can't get there.

Paper towels, in a civilized land.
9th-Jan-2008 01:31 pm (UTC)
Congrats! That's excellent.

I may have asked before, but just wondering, are the UK/Aus editions going to catch up to the US ones? I just love the Saturn Returns cover, and even though Martiniere is a genius, I don't find it's well-treated by the cover design or the small format. But I'm not sure I could change over to the UK editions if I'll be waiting for months after the next US one comes out ;)

*heh* I'm sure you see my predicament! That said, I received the lovely-looking Cenotaxis a week or two ago and haven't read it yet :/ It's next on my list, and won't take long to read...
10th-Jan-2008 01:15 am (UTC)
Thanks, Pete. We were hoping to sync up the releases this year, but I fear there might be a spanner in those particular works. I'll report here once I know for sure.

Isn't CENOTAXIS beeyootiful? I am completelly in love with that little tome at the moment. I hope the contents do the cover justice. :-)

Congratulations and good luck! To be nominated with M John Harrison and Elizabeth Bear is a great honour.

I refuse to make Dick jokes. Besides, someone has already done all the good ones...
10th-Jan-2008 04:09 am (UTC)
Congratulations!
